Time to be Thankful

Shannon and Paige

How blood donations saved Shannon and Paige

Thanksgiving serves as a reminder for us to pause, and consider all that we are grateful for. Recently, Great-West Life, who was one of our national Give Life partners in August, shared stories from employees about why they are passionate about Canadian Blood Services. One employee, Shannon, has a new perspective on the importance of blood donation after her daughter was born at just 28 weeks and 2 days into her pregnancy.

Read why Shannon is grateful for your commitment:

When a complication arose, she and her husband went straight to the hospital to get checked out thinking she’d go on bed rest until closer to her due date. About 18 hours later, she had already received a blood transfusion and was getting ready to undergo an emergency caesarean section.

Baby Paige was born safely at 2lbs 15oz and was taken right to the neonatal intensive care unit. Paige’s nurses tested her hemoglobin levels daily and discovered she had a brain bleed. That meant Paige required a blood transfusion too.

Today, Shannon and Paige are doing well.

“Without these life-saving blood donations, Paige and I wouldn’t be here,” says Shannon. “My family will forever be grateful to blood donors and Canadian Blood Services.”

National Honouring Our Lifeblood

Honouring our Lifeblood event

The national Honouring our Lifeblood event celebrates the people and organizations whose support sustains our country’s blood system, stem cell network and transplant system. This year the back drop for the event was the beautiful Museum of History in Hull, Quebec(1).

The event was emceed by retired Grey Cup quaterback Henry Burris(4) who helped us celebrate the partners that play such a huge role in saving lives. The partners honoured at the event were: University of British Columbia, The Jim Pattison Broadcast group, Sick Kids Hospital, and Team Marlie(3). Our national partner award was presented to the Department of National Defence(2).

The Department of National Defence became the first national organization in 2006 to partner with Canadian Blood Services.  Since that time, more than 30,000 units of blood have been donated through their partnership. How do they do this?  Canadian Forces Health Services promotes blood and stem cell donation, hosting blood drives and swabbing events. They also support time off for employees who want to donate. This commitment exemplifies the longstanding relationship between Canada's military and the blood system, which began with the early days of blood transfusion during WWI and grew as Canadians donated blood to help wounded troops during WWII.

National GiveLife Partners

Thank you to the national Give Life partners who share their stories and our message every month. They help us celebrate existing donors and encourage new donors to GIVE LIFE. Read about these partners on blood.ca: Proud Partners

The Okanagan Sun football team scores a touchdown saving lives!

Okanagan Sun football team

British Columbia and Yukon

The Okanagan Sun football team was looking for different ways to give back to the community, and adopting a blood drive on the long weekend in August was the perfect fit. Bryann, the team’s trainer, is a regular donor and she encouraged the coach to set a date for the whole team to donate. Over 35 donors from the team, staff and supporters came to blood donor centre, and 20 individuals were able to register as stem cell donors. Canadian Blood Services summer students met the team before the blood drive to book appointments and help answer questions about eligibility.  Connor and his mom Lee-Ann spoke to the team about Connor’s battle with cancer and his need for blood products during his treatment. Connor was able to join the team on the field before a game to do the official coin toss.

Head Coach Ben Macauley hopes other teams join the cause. “We had a great experience adopting the blood drive for a day! It was a great chance for us to connect and give back to our community in a meaningful way. The process couldn’t be easier, and the staff made the event a lot of fun. The Okanagan Sun would like to challenge other teams and groups to get out there and get involved. Whether you adopt a blood drive or rally for donations, make an immediate impact in your community!” said Macauley.
