Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for-profit, charitable organization operating at arm's length from governments. Its primary purpose is to manage the national blood system for Canadians, and it fulfils this vital life-saving function through an integrated supply chain which links to over 700 hospitals, health authorities and clinical sites across the country. Canadians rely on the organization to provide a range of biological products (fresh blood components, plasma derivatives, stem cells) and a suite of clinical services in the areas of stem cell and organ donation and transplantation, and laboratory diagnostics. Canadian Blood Services also has a strong focus on its leadership role in innovation, knowledge creation and translation, and product and process development.

The Call for Board Directors is occurring due to the routine expiration of terms of current Directors. Thirteen members make up the Board including the Chair, four Regional Nominees (appointed directly by the Provinces and Territories), two Consumer Nominees (who have direct involvement or knowledge of the system gained as a user of Canadian Blood Services products), and six General Nominees.

Canadian Blood Services’ Board must be composed of talented and dedicated individuals who possess the expertise, credentials, and experience to effectively govern the organization. Significant governance experience in a multi-stakeholder organization is required for most Board positions. A breadth of knowledge of the Canadian health care system is highly desirable. However, while skills remain the most important consideration for appointment, it is the goal of Canadian Blood Services that the Board reflects a diversity of gender, identities, age, colour, abilities, backgrounds, cultures, perspectives and experiences that represent Canada’s population. Applications are invited from Canadian citizens from all geographic areas of the country for the five Board positions scheduled for election in the Fall of 2021:

  • One position as Chair - individuals interested in this position must have experience in the role of Chair, preferably with a large, complex organization.
  • One position as a Consumer Nominee; and
  • Three positions as General Nominees – candidates with business backgrounds must be able to demonstrate sound financial literacy, preferably bring senior executive experience in a large, complex organization, and ideally, experience with supply chain or quality management. Candidates with scientific, medical, technical, or public health backgrounds will bring transfusion and transplantation expertise, perhaps in combination with clinical, public health and/or research experience.
