Edmond Chan

Blood Donor

Edmond Chan has a special appreciation for people who donate blood products, and for those who join Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry. For 17 years, their generosity helped extend the life of his wife, Christina.

Two years into their marriage, Christina developed acute myeloid leukemia. Thanks to chemotherapy, along with countless transfusions of donated blood and blood products, the cancer went into remission for more than nine years. When the disease returned, Christina underwent two stem cell transplants. Edmond cared for her every step of the way and became a strong advocate for blood donation and the stem cell registry. Formerly a sporadic blood donor — he first donated while in university — Edmond started donating regularly, celebrating each donation with Christina. Sadly, Christina passed away in 2020. Edmond continues to donate and recently completed his 100th donation.

“It’s an honour to be recognized,” says Edmond, “and it gives me a platform to scream louder, to advocate further and to encourage others to act.”
