Plasma and me. My life with CVID

I have battled sinus, GI and skin infections for over 20 years. My IgA and white counts and a few other blood markers were always low. Doctors usually brushed it aside and had no answers.

In late 2023, after a series of scopes in my stomach, it was noted that I had ulcers that would not heal. In March of 2024 I was referred to a surgical oncologist at Mount Sinai, as well as an immunologist at St. Micheal's, both in Toronto.

The surgeon wasted no time in telling me I needed to have the diseased section of my stomach removed, which was scheduled for three weeks ahead. After an 8 hour surgery and long recovery I went to the next step.

June of that year I was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID) - my blood does not possess the antibodies to fight infections.

Each week I do self-administered infusions at home using plasma derived medicine. It takes about 1.5 hours each week.

Without the people who so generously give their time and their blood, folks like me would continue to battle frequent infections, exhaustion and generally feeling unwell.

I want to thank everyone who donates blood products. You are life savers. Without you, people like me would continue to be sick.

Thank you.
