Donation safety

Canadian Blood Services is deeply saddened by the passing of two individuals in Winnipeg who were plasma donors with Grifols. Our thoughts are with the donors’ loved ones, and everyone affected. We are in contact with Grifols about this, and we understand that Health Canada has been appropriately engaged.

All donation centres in Canada regardless of whether donors are paid or not, are licensed by Health Canada, and must abide by stringent regulations; because of this, serious health events are exceedingly rare. There is currently no evidence that suggests a correlation between the individuals’ health events and the donation process. Any review undertaken by Health Canada is independent and grounded in evidence, and we trust in the guidelines and strict governance Health Canada brings, making plasma and blood donation safe.

Canadian Blood Services is working to collect more plasma than ever before to address the rising demand for immunoglobulins – a lifesaving medication that is made from plasma. In 2022 we entered into an agreement with Grifols because they are recognized as a global leader in plasma collection and manufacturing. Our agreement with Grifols remains an important part of increasing plasma sufficiency for immunoglobulins in Canada, a medication that thousands of Canadians rely on.

The safety of patients and donors is paramount in all blood systems and we are proud to have one of the safest systems in the world, here in Canada. Click here to learn more about donor wellness and safety.
