An update on plasma collection in Canada

Canadian Blood Services was recently notified by Grifols about their decision to temporarily pause operation of their Canadian plasma collection centres across Canada. Canadian Blood Services strongly supports the decision made by Grifols to take further actions to address the issues raised by Health Canada. 

The health and safety of donors and patients, and the trust Canadians place in our country's blood system, are paramount. This pause will allow Grifols to complete staff retraining as part of its comprehensive action plan that's been underway for some time. This plan will address the identified concerns and ensure its operations meet rigorous safety and quality standards. 

This temporary pause will not affect the availability of plasma-derived products for Canadian patients. Canadian Blood Services has sufficient inventory and established supply arrangements in place to ensure patients will continue to receive the products they need without interruption. 

We have been reassured by both Health Canada and Grifols that there are no concerns related to donor or product safety. 

Grifols is taking decisive action and we will continue working closely with our partner to ensure the identified concerns are fully addressed.
