Dr. Lane is working to improve laboratory standards and accreditation, risk reduction of mistransfusion, intrauterine transfusion and exchange transfusion methods, and Kell sensitization in pregnant mothers. She is also interested in reducing bacterial contamination of platelets and developing guidelines for the rational use of intravenous immune globulin (IVIg).
Brief Biography
Dr. Lane has been a Medical Director of Canadian Blood Services since 1996. She graduated from medical school at the University of Calgary, where she also completed her Family Medicine Training. Debra trained in Hematopathology at the University of Alberta and did a research fellowship in HLA and Platelet Crossmatching at the Edmonton Red Cross. Dr. Lane enjoys teaching and has taught medical laboratory technology students, medical laboratory technologists, medical students, residents and physicians.
Dr. Lane is active on many committees to improve transfusion medicine. She served as a founding member and Vice-Chair of the Royal College Specialty of Transfusion Medicine Committee. She is also active in accreditation and has served as an assessor for almost 20 years for AABB, College of American Pathologists, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. She was a board member of the CSTM for several years and also served as the physician member on the CSTM Standards Committee. In Edmonton, Dr. Lane founded a chapter of the Federation of Medical Woman. In 2013, she was awarded the Ortho Award for excellence in Transfusion Medicine. She has been nominated twice for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award (2006 and 2017).
Outside of work, Dr. Lane loves nature. She was active as a Boy Scout Leader and Commissioner for 13 years and received the Lord Baden Powell Medal for Scouting.
