In search of a treatment: Canadian Blood Services is proud to be part of a national clinical trial to test the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 convalescent plasma as a possible treatment option for patients with the virus. Our Chief Scientist, Dana Devine spoke with The Agenda to discuss the clinical trial.
Stem cell stories of giving and gratitude: Stem cells can be used to help patients with many conditions, however the COVID-19 pandemic is having an impact on stem cell transplantation. For this reason, we expect transplant centres in Canada will rely more than ever on Canadian donors to provide lifesaving matches for patients. To encourage Canadians to join our stem cell registry, donors and recipients shared their stories in a new video.
Managing your finances during a pandemic: Regardless of the cause, precarious financial situations can lead to stress. Employees and their families can access a variety of tools and resources to support their financial wellbeing, including access to financial advisors through our employee assistance and benefits programs free of charge.
Some words of thanks from our donors: Our essential staff are on the frontlines every day because lives depend on it. We receive hundreds notes of gratitude each week from donors after they have interacted with frontline employees — and we think it is important that you know how much of an impact you have made on them. Before you head into your weekend, please pause to read a small selection of their appreciation:
“This was my first experience donating blood. From the moment I arrived to when I left all of the staff were super friendly, professional, and informative. Everyone I interacted with thanked me for coming in and donating – and they said it in a way that made me feel like they meant it, and I really appreciated that. Finally, I just want to say a big THANK YOU back to all the people working there, especially during these times of COVID-19. All of your frontline workers are amazing I appreciate you being there to keep the system running!” (Vancouver)
“It was my first time ever giving blood...it was something I had always wanted to do but never had done. With COVID-19... I felt like this was something I could do to help... everyone at the donation site was awesome, friendly and truly cared despite such a tense time for people in a time of social distancing. It was a great experience and one I look forward to doing again.” (Alberta)
“I appreciate the efforts to construct an ambiance where cleanliness and social distancing protocols were clearly in effect. The process was tightly organized and inspired confidence that everything is being done to keep donors safe. Thank you!” (Nova Scotia)
“It is different now with COVID-19. I can still see everyone's smile around their eyes in spite of the mask!” (Ontario)
