Young Blood For Life

Youth Development Champion Workshop

What Is It?
Kicka! The Youth Development Champion Workshop is designed to assist high school students in peer recruitment efforts at their school and to drive their peers to take part in ‘Young Blood for Life’. This exciting day-long workshop brings together thousands of students from local high schools.

Students will learn about Canadian Blood Services, the “Young Blood for Life” program, and blood donation. They will also learn about the biology of blood, donor eligibility, volunteer opportunities, clinic planning and organization and the need for blood. Workshops are typically held around the end of September or beginning of October.

Who Is It For?
The Youth Development Champion Workshop is designed for senior-level high school students, ideally those actively involved in student government, school leadership programs or those identified for leadership development opportunities. The Youth Development Champions will assist our local staff with donor recruitment and clinic promotion & planning as it pertains to their school’s involvement including the Young Blood for Life Challenge. It’s a terrific opportunity for students to develop leadership skills as well as to improve on their communication, organization and planning skills.

Why Are We Doing It?
Kicka!Last year almost 9% of all blood donors attending our donation events were teenagers – over 37,000 of them. Successful high school programs across Canada have been in place for some time and have facilitated this significant life saving support from students. These programs have motivated student leaders, promoted LifeBus and mobile blood donor clinics, and encouraged blood donations. This initiative is designed to further support blood donation from high school students and will complement existing high schools programs in your area.

What Tools Are Available?
All workshop materials from planning timelines to invitations, PowerPoint presentations and follow-up materials are available from your local Canadian Blood Services representative. Teacher organizers, principals and board of education representatives are also available to provide an introduction and an overview of the program. For more information on the tools available, contact us at youngbloodforlife@blood.ca.
